AI in the classroom: learning to create, not just consume
An open method for bringing artificial intelligence into primary school. The idea fits in one line and lasts for decades: kids use AI as a tool to create, without giving up authorship. I tell the story, AI helps me.
Two ways to use AI
The whole method starts from a distinction you grasp in a minute: consuming is not the same as creating.
CONSUME · 'DO IT FOR ME' — AI does the work. 'Do my homework', 'write my essay.' The child hands in whatever comes out and does not understand it. Good grades for a while, but no real learning. Not like this: 'Summarize chapter 5 and write my essay.'
CREATE · 'DO IT WITH ME' — AI assists, the child leads. 'Explain it three ways', 'quiz me and tell me why.' The child uses it as a coach, not a substitute. By 16, they can learn anything. Better: 'Explain chapter 5 with an example and ask me 3 questions; then check my essay and tell me what to improve, without rewriting it.'
Three pillars
- AI as copilot, not author. The child is the architect of the project; AI is their brush, their writing assistant or their prototype generator.
- Iteration and process. The prompting, framing the idea well, and the editing afterward matter more than the instant result.
- Critical thinking. Kids judge whether the result is accurate, fair and creative, and fix the model's mistakes.
Sessions by age
- Grade 2 (ages 7 to 8): AI as illustrator and storyteller. I draw, AI improves or completes it. Create short stories and use AI to make images for them. Understand that AI follows our instructions, with simple prompts.
- Grade 4 (ages 9 to 10): AI as world builder. I design the logic and the structure, AI helps me expand the possibilities. Build scripts for games or worlds: levels, characters and endings. Develop more complex prompting and narrative coherence.
- Grade 6 (ages 11 to 12): AI as editor and reviewer. I create and direct, AI helps with execution, but I review the result. Bigger projects, like a digital magazine, a podcast or a short film: research, organize sources and edit, always with human review. Understand bias, accuracy and authorship.
Why it works
- Demystifying: When you understand how AI works inside, the fear goes and control comes.
- Inclusion: Kids who struggle with writing or drawing can still express complex ideas. It levels the creative playing field.
- Critical literacy: Those who learn to create with AI are better at spotting what is synthetic. The best vaccine against disinformation.
Materials for the whole school community
