Learning times tables with AI, without tears at the kitchen table

Times tables nearly always jam at the same place: the seven and the eight, at the kitchen table at seven in the evening. AI works as a quizmaster with infinite patience, and it works if you keep three rules.

Times tables arrive around Year 3, second or third grade depending on where you are, and with them the seven o'clock scene: the exercise book, the seven times table, a tired child and an adult trying not to sigh. The problem is almost never the child's head. It is that chanting is boring, and that whoever is asking the questions ran out of patience an hour ago, which you can hear in their voice.

This is where AI has one concrete and deeply unglamorous advantage: it does not get tired, it does not sigh and it does not raise an eyebrow when 7 times 8 goes wrong for the fourth time. It also switches format effortlessly, quiz today, story tomorrow, race against the clock the day after. That does not make it a teacher, it makes it a tireless practice partner.

Three rules before you start

  • One table a day. Ten minutes on the six times table beats half an hour hopping between all of them.
  • Mistakes cost nothing: no penalty points, no broken streak. A wrong answer just means that question comes back at the end.
  • Your child gets to quiz the AI too. They ask, they check the answers, they hunt for errors, and errors do turn up. Catching one is worth more than ten correct answers of their own.
  • Stop while it is still fun, not when nothing works any more. Ten good minutes today are what buys you another ten tomorrow.

The twist sits in the third rule, and it is the part children enjoy most. Once your child has been answering for a while, swap roles: now they ask and the AI answers. Chat models get arithmetic right most of the time, but they do slip, especially when you deliberately hand them something convoluted. The moment an eight year old corrects the machine and checks it against the printed table is worth more than the whole practice round.

And an honest closing note: paper flashcards work just as well. AI does not learn the tables for your child and it does not make memorising faster, it only stops the practice from looking identical every day, and it takes the asking off the adult. If flashcards work in your house, nothing needs to change.

Will my child not just use the AI to do the homework?

That is why the prompt asks for ten questions one at a time: the AI is not solving, it is asking. And the difference deserves to be said out loud once: for practice yes, for handing in no, not least because many schools explicitly forbid it.

What age does this make sense from?

As soon as times tables come up in class, roughly Year 3 or second grade, and at the start always with an adult sitting nearby. For the first few days it is worth reading along to see what questions come up, so you can adjust the level before your child practises alone.
