Ten words before the trip: holiday languages are learned by playing

The holidays are a few weeks away, and there is a gift that fits in any suitcase: ten words of the local language. Not to speak it, but to dare: a child who says hello and thank you in the local language travels differently, and the smile they get back is something no screen can deliver.

AI is the perfect private tutor for ten minutes here: it picks useful words, invents memory tricks and sets up the rehearsal. Then the app closes, and what you learned gets played at the breakfast table.

Get your word kit

We are going on holiday to [COUNTRY] and want to learn the basics of [LANGUAGE] as a family, with kids aged [AGES]. Pick 10 useful words or phrases for a child, such as hello, thank you, please, my name is..., one ice cream please and where is the toilet. For each one: a rough written pronunciation, a fun trick to remember it and, at the end, a mini rhyme that ties them all together. Finish with a short role play to rehearse the scene of ordering an ice cream.

The memory tricks are half the battle: the sillier the mental picture, the better it sticks. If a trick does not land, ask for another: it usually improves once you tell the AI what makes your kids laugh.

Turn it into a family game

• One new word per breakfast, and the whole family uses it all day, however silly it sounds.
• Rehearse the role play: one adult plays the grumpy ice cream seller, the kids order in the new language.
• On the trip, every word used with a real person earns a point.
• Whoever collects the most points picks the ice cream, the beach or the plan for the last day.

The AI was never the point: the point is that moment at the ice cream shop when your child takes a deep breath, says their line and is understood. The AI was only the rehearsal stage; the applause happens in the street.
