What actually happens that day
Much of the EU AI Act becomes enforceable by national authorities, and with it the penalty regime. The AI literacy obligation does not start that day: it has applied since 2 February 2025 to providers and to deployers of AI systems. What arrives on 2 August is the ability to demand it.
Who it really touches in daily life
Not you as a parent at home. It touches organisations: your children's school, your employer, public administration. If the school uses AI in class it is a deployer, and it has to make sure the people working with it know what they are doing. That is the real lever families have, and it is a lever made of questions, not complaints.
What this regulation does not do
- It sets no minimum age for chatbots: that is still decided by each provider's terms.
- It forces no app to add parental controls.
- It changes nothing about what happens in your living room on a Sunday afternoon.
Put differently: what protects a 13 year old on 3 August is exactly what protected them on 1 August, namely the service's minimum age, whatever controls that service offers, and what you agree at home.
What to do with the date
Treat it as a good excuse. It is the moment in the year when a school is most willing to answer which AI it uses and with what training, and when an employer reviews the same. Asking in August or September costs no more than asking in March and gets better answers.
